Riverside Gold Wins the Queen of New York


The Riverside Hawks Gold 15U team participated in the Gauchos Queen of New York tournament at Queens College.  This tournament had a top division that included sixteen teams that were listed as 17U, 16U and 15U teams.  The Hawks opened up play vs. NYC Gauchos 16U team and won by 6 points.  The next opponent in this championship format was the B-More Hoopers, Riverside won 51-32.  In the semifinal game Riverside beat the NJ Sparks 16U 48-40. 
 
In the championship game Riverside played Team Epiphanny Prince that beat Alana Beard All Stars 16U, NJ Sparks 17 Elite and Boo Williams (Maryland) to get to the championship game vs. Riverside.  Team Epiphanny Prince had strong performances all weekend from Sade Edwards (Nazareth), Aaliyah Jones (Bishop Ford) , Marina Mabrey and Katelynn Flaherty (who both play for NJ State champion Manasquan HS) as well as others from South Shore HS.  Riverside started the game off strong jumping out to a 12-2 lead just to see the Manasquan duo hit back-to-back threes and Aaliyah going coast-to-coast for a left hand finish to cut the lead to two.  This game remained close until the final buzzer as Riverside converted free throws at the end to win 64-59. 

Riverside Gold had a total team effort by all players that played this weekend: Candace Belvedere, Coulter Bowlen, Arella Guirante, Marilyn Lehmuller, Alyssa Murphy, Makeda Nicholas (All Tournament Team), Tyla Parham (championship game MVP), Kiersten West and Charise Wilson (All Tournament Team).  Every player had a major contribution for the Hawks as Tyla walked away with the MVP of the championship game.  Kalifa Davy is on this team as well but wasn't available this weekend.
