Player Spotlight: Mei-Lyn Bautista

Mei-Lyn Bautista was okay with being interviewed, but her eyes lit up at the chance to walk back out on the court with her St. Marys teammates they had just won the NSCHSAA title after an up and down two years and a trying week in practice. Bautista would be the leader of the pack when the Gaels went back out to the gym as champions. Her natural instinct is to lead, whether on the court, off it, or somewhere in between.

Shes a future Division I player, so I expect a lot from her, said St. Marys Coach Tom Flynn. With the pressure heaped on the Queens native at the point guard spot, Bautista has handled her underclassman years like a veteran, led her team to a title as a junior and continues to blossom.

I realize Im small, Bautista said. So Im always working on my game. Im never perfect.

Since her debut as a Gael her sophomore year, Bautista has expanded her duties beyond her reputation for setting up teammates, controlling the tempo and being the brains behind the operation. Most noticeably, her improved three point shot stretches out defenses, and with forwards like Jordan Augustus and Charlotte Renker on the wing and in the paint, Bautista is on her way to becoming a constant threat when the ball is in her hands. But as stated, she knows perfection is always quite a distance and will continue to polish her skills over the summer with the NYC Heat AAU program.

Ill really be working on my speed [in the offseason], the 55 floor general said. I know I need to get stronger at my [height], too. And I always want to work on playing smarter.

Bautista currently holds Division I offers from Seton Hall University and George Washington University
