Kathleen Everson from Sachem East

If point guard Katie Doherty is Sachem East’s ignition, fellow junior Kathleen Everson is the motor. One clicks, the other gets going and the machine is able to run - Sachem East is now on a run for a state title.

“Kat Everson is a staple,” said Sachem East Head Coach Matt Brisson. “And she steps up when [the defense] is on Katie and vice versa.”

Like Doherty, Everson has basketball in her blood  - her father, Chuck, won an NCAA title with Villanova - and on the court, her natural disposition for the game is evident. In the Long Island championship game against Massapequa, the small forward was a threat from different spots on the floor, nailing mid-range jumpers, cleaning up inside and taking defenders off the dribble; every last one of her 18 points was needed for Sachem’s 55-50 victory. Nonetheless, it was simply another day at the office for Everson, who netted 25 points to lead her team over Southampton for the overall Suffolk title a few days prior and averaged just over 14 per game for the Flaming Arrows this season. Everson also adhered to the code of defense and showed no aversion to hustle and dirty work, but she’s aware that constant improvement is a must. The summer between one’s junior and senior year is where steps become leaps and the final window of opportunity to improve before college (and a final high school season) opens.  Everson is prepared to push herself in areas she wants to improve and in turn, open up her recruiting.

“This summer, I will need to focus on improving my speed, jumping and ball-handling,” she said. “I’ll be training at Revolution Athletics [in Bohemia] and working with [trainer] Jerry Powell.”

The talented wing will also join Doherty on [Long Island Lutheran Head Coach] Richie Slater’s Long Island Lightning AAU team and hone her skills against stronger competition on the circuit this summer. But first and foremost is unfinished business upstate. Everson believes team chemistry and the close-knit nature of all ball players reared and developed in the Sachem system are the Flaming Arrows’ greatest attributes.

“Six or seven of us have been playing together since we were little kids,” she said. “I’ve never lost confidence in us and I trust my teammates.”
