Irvington Stops Southampton in B Regional

When you score four more points in a half than the opposing team’s two star players, winning the game is an uphill battle. And despite a valiant second half climb, the Southampton Mariners fell to the Irvington Bulldogs and their dynamic guard-forward tandem of Brittini Lai and Alexis Martins, 62-41.

Despite spurts of stingy defense, Southampton flat out struggled to score in the first half, netting a modest 14 points after 16 minutes of action. But the Class B champs from Suffolk came out with purpose in the second via strong three point shooting from Cassidy Guida. Fellow seniors Paris Hodges and Kesi Goree chipped in at the line and cut the Bulldogs’ lead to 10, the smallest it had been since early in the first quarter. Nonetheless, the 35-25 score with 5:40 left in the third quarter was the closest Southampton could get to a trip upstate – a pair of seniors from the Westchester County squad quickly nipped those aspirations in the bud.

The Lai and Martins show was simply too tough an act to stop; Martins ended an Irvington scoring drought by scoring 17 of the Bulldogs’ third quarter points. As she pounded her way inside to make it a 20 point game in the fourth quarter, Lai joined the fray with outside shooting – when the smoke cleared, the duo had scored 23 second half points to Southampton’s 27. Hodges and Goree fought till the final buzzer, scoring 15 and 12 points, respectively, but a day after clipping Cold Spring Harbor for the Long Island crown, the Mariners had no response for the Bulldogs' high octane duo.

Martins led all scorers with 25 points. Lai added 17.
