Friars cruise past SJB, return to championship game

Unlike the St. Mary’s/Kellenberg game, “three’s a charm” was never a possible thought for St. Anthony’s and St. John the Baptist’s third meeting of the season.

Despite individual efforts from SJB guards Gianna Locker and Kayla Hill (who scored 19 and 14 points, respectively), the Cougars were no match for their Suffolk county rivals and found themselves on the receiving end of an 86-56 loss at St. Dominic’s.

The Friars’ full court pressure and athleticism disrupted passing lanes from the opening tip, and the transition buckets poured on in droves. The slick passing of senior PG, Tyla Parham (8 assists), put St. Anthony’s up, 10-4, early, but the levee broke when SJB’s turnovers began to mount. An all-transition points 14-0 run decided the game early, as senior guards Charise Wilson and Chastity Taylor made a highlight reel of break away lay-ups. Each member of the duo netted 12 of their 17 and 13 points, respectively, in the first quarter, while sophomore forward, Jayla Jones-Pack (6 points), converted in the half court set and kept the Cougars off their offensive glass. With the Friars up 34-10 after eight minutes and amassing a 30-point lead two minutes into the second quarter, the benches were cleared with 5:54 left to play in the half.

The tale of the second half wasn’t much different than the first, with St. Anthony’s second and third units, led by sophomore, Taylor Goode (13 points), maintaining the lead.

Freshman guard, Megan McBrien, added 17 points for SJB.

St. Anthony’s will defend its title on Sunday against St. Mary’s at CW Post at 1PM.
